Thursday 1st March - AGM and Meeting - Wild Boar & Deer
7.15 pm at the Loft, Mackenzie Hall, Brockweir.
Talks by two speakers on Wild Boar and Deer in
the Hudnalls.
Our next meeting will be about large, wild animals, wild boar and fallow deer. The deer are well and truly here and have been increasing for the last decade or so, whereas the boar have only just arrived on the scene. The deer already make it difficult for residents in some parts of the parishes to grow flowers and vegetables in their gardens, and the boar could prove to be extremely damaging in gardens and disruptive in pastures and meadows. Both, on the other hand, are interesting, attractive and even frightening – you decide which – but also good to eat if you can catch them and know what to do next.
We will have two speakers to help us consider these aspects. Ian Harvey from the Forestry Commission is the officer currently in charge of responses to the boar population that was released into the Dean and has since been spreading beyond its borders. Bart Venner is a well-known resident of St Briavels who, at an earlier stage in his lifetime in forestry, was the deer officer for the Forestry Commission in the Dean. Between the two of them we could hardly have a better opportunity to get to know these beasts.
We will also hold our AGM that evening. As far as the committee knows, this should be routine, but this is the opportunity for any member to bring up ideas and issues. We still need to find a new general secretary/treasurer to replace Jean Pitt: any one who thinks they might like to contribute this way can contact me or other committee member.
Even though this is the AGM, non-members are very welcome – though we will probably try to persuade you to join!
